This guy is seriously a sick pig. More disgusting is that he leads the 2012 Republican presidential candidates. His recent statements about poor kids are factually untrue.
Freddie Mac paid Gingrich $1.6 million to study these issues as an “historian.” OK, maybe he’s the only guy in America who blames the bad economy on allegedly lazy poor children, but does that make him wrong? The rest of us aren’t big thinkers like Newton (not Isaac).
Here is why, in the end, I think Newt is toast. Americans can “forgive” men for cheating. I think they won’t forgive Callista. Mark my words, as we get closer to the primaries, Romney’s team will “secretly” let people know that Callista was a 29 year old blowing Newt on his office desk, while his second wife was suffering from MS.
They would vote for a guy who got hummers in his office, but they won’t want the woman who gave them to be first lady. Just a gut feeling I have about our double standard culture.
As Speaker of the House, Gingrich led the charge to impeach Bill Clinton for doing in the Oval Office exactly what Gingrich was doing in the Speaker’s office. Which was totally NOT hypocritical, according to Gingrich.
Newt just so epitomizes everything that is wrong with “conservatives.” He’s a philanderer, a sociopath, a megalomaniac, and rich swine who’s probably never done an honest day’s work, a reprobate and a stunning hypocrite. He’s their perfect candidate!
Andrew Sullivan had an interesting email from a reader about Newt’s appeal:
I spent Thanksgiving with my family of formerly-sensible moderates and conservatives. Every one of them has morphed into a Gingrich fan. As much as the commentariat likes to talk about electability, the just-regular-folks I spent the holidays with talked only about how Newt would “hammer” the President during debates. “Can you imagine,” my sister said, her eyes as lit-up as a child’s on Christmas morning. “When Obama starts that smartest-guy-in-the-room shit, Newt’ll shut him up.” No one talked about policy or even politics. This is a mob storming the Bastille, cheering the guillotine, and Gingrich is their most likely Robespierre.
Is that feeling widespread enough to get a loon like Gingrich elected? I hope not, and don’t think so. But it’s enough to get him nominated, and anyone who doubts that needs to get out more. There’s a big slice of the electorate that has lost all perspective. The only thing they’re interested in is the visceral joy of watching someone destroy and humiliate “that damned Obama.” They’re convinced that Gingrich is just the guy to administer the rough justice they crave, and whether he’s electable or would even be good for the country simply doesn’t enter into their thinking.
Sullivan followed up with his own comment:
Of course, when you actually imagine a Gingrich-Obama debate, and you are not living in a cocoon that insists that Obama is both dumb and a commie, you see how fatal a trap this could be for the GOP.
It’s not just that Obama is a smart person whereas Gingrich is simply a dumb person’s idea of a smart person. It’s that Obama has always excelled up against a volatile, angry opponent. He is a master of allowing them to self-destruct. He got that Houdini-like master of political survival, Bill Clinton, to blow up in the primaries. In a matter of days, he got McCain to destroy his bid with his frantic response to the Lehman collapse.
I mean: who’s gonna seem like the angry guy in a Newt-Barack match? Who’s gonna seem like the old, rather than mature, one? Even when Gingrich was Speaker, he couldn’t muster any grace or authority or calm: things we like in a crisis and a president.
I can’t believe the GOP is going to fall for this yet another time. But their loathing of Obama seems to trump all reason, prudence, or guile. Once again, the jujitsu Obama model of politics emerges as his strongest weapon. Given the economy, it may not be enough. But man, does Obama get lucky sometimes in his opponents.
