We went to the moon, and discovered earth

I posted the first part of this in a thread, but this second part really needs its own space.

We have a chance to go to Mars, maybe becoming Martian could help us become human…

I’m proud my dad was part of it.

    brewski:

Did your dad have a name? Would he be proud of you?

What was your dad a part of?

  3. #3 by brewski on August 8, 2012 - 4:33 pm

yes, he still has a name. He now teaches masters level engineering but for 50 years he was an aerospace engineer with one of the major space contractors.

pretty much all of the space projects had numerous contractors and subcontractors working on different components, so at different points in time over 50 years he was working on small and large parts of some of the space programs. sometimes it’s the launch vehicle, sometimes the manned orbiters, sometimes the unmanned satellites.

    brewski:

You managed to answer two of three questions. I admire your dads quest for science excellence. I’m not so interested in contractors and subcontractors though. Was his main interest in conquest, money or science.

Also, I’d like that third question of mine answered.

True scientists and artists aren’t interested in money as much as science, art and humanity.

    Case in point:

Being born in 1952, I might have contracted polio, but I got a polio vaccination by a man described here:

When news of the vaccine’s success was made public on April 12, 1955, Salk was hailed as a “miracle worker”, and the day “almost became a national holiday.” His sole focus had been to develop a safe and effective vaccine as rapidly as possible, with no interest in personal profit. When he was asked in a televised interview who owned the patent to the vaccine, Salk replied: “There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?”

…as brewski hurriedly tries to dig up dirt on Jonas Salk…

Is my dad proud of me? Of course he is. He is proud of all of his children.

He is an engineer’s engineer. He loves the technical challenge. I don’t think he is into the conquest or the science as much as the technical challenge of making something which has never been made before.

He was definitely not in it for the money. He has turned down lots of opportunities to make money and chooses to do things which he finds interesting.

SkyLab was probably the project he was most proud.

What possible dirt could one find on Salk and what possible reason could I have for wanting to find dirt on Salk? He is a hero.

    brewski:

    Salk had three names; first-middle-last:

    Jonas Edward Salk.

Yourself and your father are left with brewski.

Did you ever watch Robert Redford’s “Quiz Show“?

Sorry brewski, that was really harsh, but you have your anonymous internet personality to fall back on unless the Utah NSA national security complex decides you are a threat to Mitt Rmoney or the Church.

I have no fucking way of knowing!

Feel safe. (no question mark included. Don’t know where you live – I’m in the book, (always have been), don’t have a gun.

And this was supposed to be an inspiring post about the exploration of our astounding universe.

Before we can ever do that, we have to get rid of the flies.

    My opinion.

I don’t think I ever saw Quiz Show.

I wish we had a Salk today who could find the cure for Alzheimer’s. My mom is in advanced Alzheimer’s now. Saddest thing in the world to watch. My dad is her primary caregiver so he has had to cut back on his teaching and writing and speaking a lot to care for her. He still keeps working I think for the sole reason to keep his sanity and as a distraction from what is happening to his wife of 55 years. She was a smart lady too. Teacher. Fulbright scholarship winner. So for a disease to take away her mind before her body has a cruelty to it.

    Is this thing on?

    Best wishes to brewski’s Mom.

Thank you. Yes it is very hard on everyone around the victim. They even have a name for it. Caregiver syndrome. It has been educational for me to listen to my dad as they transitioned from private insurance to medicare. He has had to deal with denials for coverage, incomprehensible rules, limitations, bad service, etc. So anyone who thinks that government insurance or Medicare for all makes these issues go away has not spent 3 months on the phone trying to get a doctor visit paid for by Medicare.
