A battle mostly in the red states

An interesting commentary from Rachel Maddow about the divergent impact on civil rights of the Court’s Prop 8/DOMA and Voting Rights Act decisions.

She makes an interesting point – that the battles over civil rights – both marriage equality and voting access – are going to take place primarily in red states.

I got my first drivers license over forty years ago. I had to get it renewed in May. This is the first time I’ve ever had to show up anywhere with my original birth certificate AND my social security card.

You cannot tell me this is not about preventing Latinos from voting.

So the Republicans finally sit there, reverently, and vote for rights of the people. Give me a break!

The Supreme Court takes away the voting rights act so they can “win” all three branches of government and do away with the oppressed for good.

My cynical side always pokes it’s head up. Sorry!

Latinos aren’t stupid. If the Republicans steal another election and try to tell them that this vote endeared them to the wingnuts, it’s just not going to fly. This is dangerous.

The argument the court made in its decision – that times have changed and the VRA needed to be updated – would make more sense if lots of Southern states hadn’t already rushed to make voting harder for people who aren’t white.

Sometimes I feel like I’m living in the deep south. We experience the same kind of repression in many ways.

I worry, that if the Republicans can steal all three branches of government, they will just start repealing every gain we’ve made, including the latest gay rulings.

by now everybody knows the Republicans only have the congress because of gerrymandering. OMG, what am I saying, I don’t think BIG MEDIA has told anybody.

The VRA also applies to parts of California. You think California, which has had a Dem controlled legislature since the beginning of time, needs to have the Feds telling them to stop being such racists?
