Nelson Mandela Died Today

Nelson Mandela:

Born Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela in Transkei, South Africa, the civil rights activist would become the linchpin in South Africans’ move to end the country’s notorious apartheid regime. The impact of his efforts — to reconcile generosity with pragmatism and to find the common ground between humanity’s higher values and his own aspiration to power, as journalist John Carlin once described them — would ultimately reach well beyond South Africa’s borders, and earn him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

If you haven’t read it, I recommend the book Mandela’s Way.

Amid the nonstop adulatory coverage, an interesting factoid: Mandela was not removed from the U.S. terrorist list until he was 90 years old.

Back in 1986, Dick Cheney was calling Nelson Mandela a “terrorist.” Cheney certainly had the authority to help create such lists.

In fact, most of the pop conservatives, the CIA, the FBI, Ronald Raygun and so on, were opposed to Nelson Mandela, and his cause.

On the other hand, I can almost view Obama’s inclusive, but failed bipartisanship, as his feeble attempt to emulate the forgiving nature of Nelson Mandela.

Mandela’s solidarity with Palestinians – now virtually ignored – was a huge controversy when he came to the US.

I don’t agree with everything Mandela said or did, but he is a person who turned a run of the mill African shithole into an industrialized nation. South Africa would have the same fate as Congo had he not taken the helm

brewski, did pop in long enough to correctly suggest his commentary on any thread of G.Brown’s would be censored.

    Prescient.

I do hope he continues to contribute in other author’s offerings.
