Progressive Group Scores A Win With Swallow’s Downfall

Via TPM:

Outgoing Utah Attorney General John Swallow is one of those politicians who attract investigations in swarms.

There was the federal investigation, which fizzled. There’s the probe going on in the Utah House of Representatives. A couple of district attorneys in Utah are digging around, too. And then there’s the investigation conducted on behalf of Utah’s lieutenant governor’s office, which culminated in a report released last week.

The report found probable cause that Swallow committed multiple violations of state law by failing to disclose ties to several business entities. It could have led to Swallow being removed from office, had he not announced his resignation the day before it was released. And it goes in the win column for Alliance for a Better Utah, the small advocacy group that in March filed the initial complaint about Swallow with the lieutenant governor’s office.

Across the country, there are groups — advocacy groups, watchdog groups, ethics groups, political groups — that file complaints about officials, office holders, and government agencies. Often nothing happens. The Swallow saga in Utah is a rare example of a complaint making good. And while Swallow has insisted that his decision to resign was not influenced by the report from the lieutenant governor’s office, his opponents think otherwise.

“I have no doubt that Swallow knew [what the report would find],” Maryann Martindale, executive director of Alliance for a Better Utah, told TPM in an interview this week. “Because the timing of that is not just suspect, it’s just not possible for him to have done that. When only a few months prior he said, ‘I will never resign, I’ve never done anything wrong.’ … He was planning on sticking this out, I really think he thought he was going to skate by.”

Something to be thankful for.

Of course, Republicans also called for AG Swallow to resign. For example, blogger Holly Richardson has been on this theme all year.

Only In Utah!

Gary Herbert gets his way, one way or the other. :(

If you can’t pass a bill, appointed a shill.

I just hate it when my beloved state is used as a model for corruption.

Transparency is non-existent in my home state. Whether it’s your voting system or your right to know what’s happening in the legislature, it’s no longer your right to know. And it hasn’t been for a long, long time.

Just pledge allegiance and shut up!

Hatred for the Kenyan Usurper Means Romney Can Get Away With Literally Anything

This is the most honest, well-written encapsulation of what we are experiencing in the election.

Completely wrong. Liar Mitt Romney Lying

Fresh lies from Romney, or the Republican Congress

Driftglass Writes: Don’t me wrong: I appreciate the careful documentation the Many Lies of Team Romney during this election season. But I look at those efforts less as the drafting of a bill of particulars against the GOP, and more like Josephus gathering up an armful of books from burning Jerusalem and documenting the great city’s demise from a perspective in the ruins.
Why? Because for the Conservative 47% of the active electorate, the day Willard sewed up the Republican primary was the day it stopped mattering to them what lies Willard shits down their throat. Willard has calculated (correctly) that their bottomless, mindless, berserk hatred for the Kenyan Usurper means he can get away with saying and doing literally anything and then completely reversing himself hours later. And so, unless he transforms himself into a Scary Democrat Negro (hence my graphic), he has the base locked down.

Willard has calculated (correctly) that the average “undecided” voter is an idiot who is barely aware that Barack Obama is President, much less who said what when. Lies? Truth? All the “undecided” knows for sure is that people on both side should stop being so mean!

Willard has calculated (correctly) that most of American media is a joke run by hacks with the moral compasses of Tijuana donkey show pimps, who are congenitally unable to call a liar a liar and who get paid on commission each time they say “Both Sides Do It” when a Republican shits the bed in public.

Random Conservative idiots with spluttering apoplexy

Pointing to each morning’s fresh lies from Team Romney, or the Republican Congress, or Boss Limbaugh and his legions of imitators, or random Conservative idiots with spluttering apoplexy, has become the the bread and butter of Liberal teevee, radio and print. And good on them (us) for providing that service.

It does, however, beg the question, “Who the Hell are they talking to?” Because there is no referee in this fight, kids.

There is no umpire, here: no impartial judge; no jury of 12 men good and true.

For us, the playing field will never be level and we must stop playing as if it were, because there is no cavalry coming to rescue us…but us.

And most importantly; remember that however long the odds or however discouraging a given day might be, we are a hardy and tenacious stock and our clear understanding of who we are and where we came from gives us a secret weapon that no movement based on a contempt for reality and a tissue of lies can match: the power to summon giants.

Address of John F. Kennedy upon Accepting the Liberal Party Nomination for President, New York, New York, September 14, 1960…

I am as guilty as the media is for investing too much energy pointing out the lies only to have them fall on deaf ears. The soaring level of hypocrisy, obvious as it is outrageous, among the righteous, morally superior, religious and/or otherwise just plain racists is sufficient evidence to anyone who is paying attention that morality is unilaterally customizable on an ad hoc basis for the pedestrian religious right (Republicans) in this country.

So I will no longer entertain moral arguments from religious Republicans. From now on, I shall withhold my otherwise generous respect and civility in discourse with these well-groomed, Bible-thumping cretins. For the first time in my life, I finally understand how entire nations stood by and watched and/or helped Hitler exterminate millions of innocent men, women and children without a shred of self-examination. They were merely Republicans by a different name.

One more thing:

Calls for civility, especially from some in the Mormon community deserve your contempt. They are a gratuitous demand we excuse the “Many Lies of Team Romney” we’ve see during this election season. The uncommon duplicity, distortion and noise coming from Republicans is as violent assault on our Democratic principles as the illegal Republican assault on our voting rights.

Civility is speaking out against this assault. Incivility is defending it.

Most Utah Women Want Government Up Their Vaginas

Finally, I understand why there are woman who vote Republican.

Giving Utah Leaders What They Want

While most women might find it distressing that legislation has popped up across various states that would restrict affordable birth control and enforce invasive ultrasounds before going through with an abortion, these women find them to be refreshing.

Holly Richardson: Dog Whistling Water Girl or Democrat Trapped in Mamma Grizzly Bear?

Holly Tree Richardson - Killer smile!

Even for a liberal, it’s hard not to fall in love with new Utah state rep, Holly Richardson.* She has a killer smile. She’s a political activist, Orrin Hatch hater, blogger, mid-wife and she’s adopted a gaggle of foster kids as diverse as the United Nations. Simply put, Holly Mama ROCKS!

What’s not to love?

In the normal course of flirting with Holly on Facebook, I implied possibly having given a sleeping bag to one of her kids down at Occupy Salt Lake City.  Well didn’t I get slapped right back with a feistiness that would make Coulter/Bachmann/Palin proud. It still gives me tingles:

“Nah, my kids actually have a work ethic and don’t believe they are entitled to a job, to a college education or that pooping on people’s porches is appropriate behavior.”

Holly Richardson's mean reference to Occupy Wall Street Occupiers

OWS People's porch poopers

I LOVE THAT! But Holly, Holly Help me Here! Didn’t we as a nation decide our kids should be entitled to a college education AND a job?  Can we not promise that?

Because the alternative IS pooping on peoples’ porches.”

In my heart of hearts I think Holly surprised even herself and on her excellent blog, cleverly disguised her apology in a nod to the 4th Amendment.

…the casual use of pepper spray for students who posed no physical threat to police is frankly an embarrassment and an affront to our nation’s belief in free speech. I don’t agree with the Occupy protestorsbut […here comes the apology], I support their right to express their point of view.

Personal Note to Holly Richardson: (all others may stop reading now):

Holly, Everyone is saying you used the UC Davis pepper spray incident as an opportunity to associate yourself with the big banks, Freedom Works and the Koch brothers at the expense of the Patriotic Pepper-sprayed, Porch-Poopers.

Tell me it ain’t so.

Think for a moment Holly: Conservatives have been on the wrong side of every major, popular movement in world history until they supported them, INCLUDING the American revolution. Do YOU want to be on the wrong side of history?  Life is long.

I remind m’ Lady, the Tories may have secretly liked the idea of independence, but they were scared wig-less about the messy way it was going down. And they got mean about it too. You should’ve heard what they said about the Boston tea partiers (the real ones).  You’d have had to cover your ears. No, Hopeful Holly, the Conservatives of those times made life hell for George Washington and the porch-poopingpatriots” who decided to occupy their colonies.

In your defense, people say ya’ll Conservatives are afraid of change. That is absurd.**  Ya’ll seem to LOVE change — just decades later.  American Conservatives are really just afraid of  the specter of mobs.

I have good news, the OWS “porch poopers” are doctors, engineers, students, Land Rover-driving soccer Moms, librarians and Minsters and we love you! We are you.

Holly, they say you’ve capitulated to the GOP instinct that says ring shout.  Tell me it ain’t so.

Be on the right side of history. Holly, Hear me Holler! The Occupy Movement is ALREADY on the right side of history.  Things happen a lot faster today than they did when that smelly Paul Revere-hippie went bell-tower spamming on horseback.

Join us Holly! Tell that Obama bastardo to call off the DHS! I promise you’ll get just as much mileage and spare having to explain yourself to your kids someday in the future when they are able to think for themselves.

Affectionately,

Cliff

*Note: In January of this year, Holly Richardson was selected/elected/appointed to the Utah State House of Representatives to replace Craig Frank, District 57.

**Note: Every conservative I know loves light-rail and rock concerts at Red Butte once they try them

Editors Note: Personally, I think Mika Brzenzki’s response to this terribly unfortunate rhetoric reflects the kind of graceful passion I like in my ladies.

Condolences to Holly on the Hill

I just saw an article on KSL that her three year old daughter died in her sleep.

Deepest condolences to Holly and her family.

That’s Representative Holly on the Hill to You!

I disagree with her on almost every issue but Holly Richardson, the new District 57 Rep, is a person of integrity.  She means what she says and she says what she means.  Sure, she’s to the right of Otto Von Bismarck.  She’s also honest, hardworking and she’s going to do her level best to represent her constituents and advocate passionately for their interests.

Good job.  You go girl!
