I see author and activist Adrienne Rich died.
Some highlights of her life:
She was, like so many, profoundly changed by the 1960s. Rich married Harvard University economist Alfred Conrad in 1953 and they had three sons. But she left him in 1970 and eventually lived with her partner, writer and editor Michelle Cliff. She used her experiences as a mother to write “Of Woman Born,” her groundbreaking feminist critique of pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood, published in 1976.
Rich considered her lesbianism both political and personal. She was a brilliant woman.
Born in Baltimore in 1929, Rich was the elder of two daughters of a Jewish father and a Protestant mother – a mixed heritage that she recalled in her autobiographical poem “Sources.” Her father, a doctor and medical professor at Johns Hopkins University, encouraged her to write poetry at an early age.
She also coined the phrase compulsory heterosexuality:
Adrienne Rich argued that patriarchal, male-dominated society insists on compulsory heterosexuality because men benefit from male-female relationships. Society romanticizes the heterosexual relationship. Therefore, she argues, men perpetuate the myth that any other relationships are somehow deviant.
Like all ideas, it has taken on a life of its own:
Since the 1970s disagreement in the feminist movement, lesbian and other homosexual relationships have become more openly accepted in much of United States society. Some feminist and GLBT scholars continue to examine the term “compulsory heterosexuality” as they explore the biases of a society that prefers heterosexual relationships.
The tax payer funded Congress and Senate switchboard is being illegally used to push ObamaCare. If you call your Congressman or Senator via the Capitol switchboard you will be given a pitch to urge your Congressman to vote for Obama’s health-care plan.
Thank you for calling your Representative and your Senators.
Please urge them to vote yes on health insurance reform. Because the American people can no longer wait for more choices, lower costs, and coverage we can count on.
Try it yourself at 1-800-828-0498 while it lasts.
I tried it myself just to make sure and this is absolutely true.
Here is the audio:
This is not the first time government resources have been used to promote ObamaCare. As we know the administration set up a snitch email, the now defunct, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Whether you approve of Obama’s health care plan or not you should be outraged that tax-payer funded resources are being used to push anyone’s political agenda. When you call your Congressman you should not be subjected to any kind of pitch prior to being connected.
Call your Congressman and alert them to put a stop to this, and hold those responsible for this miss-allocation of government resources.
Imagine the outcry if George W Bush tried this?
After some investigating this 800 number may actually be run by liberal lobbying groups duping people into calling that number instead of the regular Capitol switchboard, then they give you the pitch and forward you to the real one.
If this is the case then we need to find out the organization(s) behind this and expose them. It would be interesting to discover the legality of this. What we may need to do is call this number repeatedly because every call costs the 800 number owners money. Just make sure you don’t let the call forward to the switchboard so no tax money will be used. This is what happened after email@example.com was exposed. So many people spammed it that it forced them to take it down.
