Deseret Book – bowing to the vocal minority

What’s the problem with Twilight books? And perhaps a more salient question: If parents object to a book, why do they insist the book should not be available to those who don’t?

It seems the Mormon church-owned Deseret Book has had a change of heart about the appropriateness of the Twilight series of books and has pulled them from its shelves.

“Our top priority is to meet the needs of our customers, who increasingly represent a variety of viewpoints,” the statement said. “Like any retailer, our purpose is to offer products that are embraced and expected by our customers. When we find products that are met with mixed review, we typically move them to special order status.”

For me the key phrase here is “mixed review”. In other words, someone complained loud enough and long enough that the church’s book store bowed to the pressure. I don’t so much care about this particular book or author so much as I care about the ability of a group to squelch free speech and deny others access.
