Chaffetz says it’s something most Americans want.
Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz is making news again, this time co-sponsoring a proposed bill that would end the granting of U.S. citizenship to babies born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents.
Anti-immigration website NumbersUSA gives Chaffetz an A grade for his anti-immigration position. They like this bill co-sponsored by Reps Dan Burton and Nathan Deal.
The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2009 would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act. Under the bill, a person born in the United States gains citizenship if one of the person’s parents is:
* a citizen or national of the United States;
* an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States whose residence is in the United States; or
* an alien performing active service in the armed forces.
I suppose the idea of the bill is to slow down illegal immigration; that is, take away the possibility for having an “anchor” baby, and people will not be as likely to enter the country illegally. Does Chaffetz really think this is the deciding factor in whether parents enter this country illegally? I doubt it will cause even one person to think twice about entering illegally.
And besides, it’s unconstitutional: Fourteenth Amendment – Rights Guaranteed Privileges and Immunities of Citizenship, Due Process and Equal Protection
Section. 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.
Perhaps JD, Bob S, and Weerd would care to weigh in on this since they are well-known defenders of literal interpretation of constitutional amendments.
We do need immigration reform, but this bill is all show and no substance. But this show plays well in Utah.
(Incidentally, why do those good conservatives of Indiana keep electing that moralizing hypocrite Burton, who cheated on his wife and fathered a child with another woman? This is the guy who led the investigation and impeachment charge against Clinton. I’m scratching my head over the double standards of these Republicans.)
