Chaffetz says it’s something most Americans want.
Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz is making news again, this time co-sponsoring a proposed bill that would end the granting of U.S. citizenship to babies born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents.
Anti-immigration website NumbersUSA gives Chaffetz an A grade for his anti-immigration position. They like this bill co-sponsored by Reps Dan Burton and Nathan Deal.
The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2009 would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act. Under the bill, a person born in the United States gains citizenship if one of the person’s parents is:
* a citizen or national of the United States;
* an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States whose residence is in the United States; or
* an alien performing active service in the armed forces.
I suppose the idea of the bill is to slow down illegal immigration; that is, take away the possibility for having an “anchor” baby, and people will not be as likely to enter the country illegally. Does Chaffetz really think this is the deciding factor in whether parents enter this country illegally? I doubt it will cause even one person to think twice about entering illegally.
And besides, it’s unconstitutional: Fourteenth Amendment – Rights Guaranteed Privileges and Immunities of Citizenship, Due Process and Equal Protection
Section. 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.
Perhaps JD, Bob S, and Weerd would care to weigh in on this since they are well-known defenders of literal interpretation of constitutional amendments.
We do need immigration reform, but this bill is all show and no substance. But this show plays well in Utah.
(Incidentally, why do those good conservatives of Indiana keep electing that moralizing hypocrite Burton, who cheated on his wife and fathered a child with another woman? This is the guy who led the investigation and impeachment charge against Clinton. I’m scratching my head over the double standards of these Republicans.)
Just when you think the McCain campaign couldn’t get more incompetence than piteous Palin prank, some plurality of criminally stupid McCain advisers let him skewer himself on SNL tonight.
Is this the same genetic defect that will probably elect Jason Chaffetz in the second congressional district.? There are even a few enlightened conservatives freaking on this xenophobic Nazi.
The real reason for my diary today is to alert the liberals to an article that came out today (Friday) in the Deseret News, my hometown (Provo) newspaper entitled Hubbub over tent-city idea irritates Chaffetz.
The Japanese American Citizens League has now joined the fray and has criticized Chaffetz for his policy position of imprisoning illegal immigrants into tent cities. This is incredibly embarrassing for us in Happy Valley, but of course, our collective embarrassment is nothing compared to the humiliation of those aliens who may be incarcerated should Chaffetz have his way. My friends and family all agree that as badly as we would rather not be represented by a Democrat, Jason Chaffetz is much, much worse.
If Chaffetz goes to Washington he will be, believe it or not, the MOST reactionary bigoted right-winger in the entire place. Against the most liberal congress in memory, this guy will be completely shut out.
I won’t be surprised if Obama declares the foothills of Utah County a National Park and boots everyone.
The Salt Lake Tribune’s Robert Gehrke holds himself to the highest standard of objective journalism so rare in the Utah media. He should be commended for his objectivity.
“Jason Chaffetz’s comments are more than just offensive and embarrassing to all Americans; they demonstrate a blatant disregard of the need to be vigilant in remembering the lessons learned from a disgraceful chapter in U.S. history. “
Some Utahn’s no doubt may view question the objectivity of that statement. But they will be unable to do so without revealing their racism and xenophobia. Chaffetz is an embarrassment to Utah, as was Cannon. The word ‘odious’ rings true.

Chavetz refuses to debate Spencer in public or to be recorded. Only Utah’s Sutherland Institute is unencumbered enough by integrity to host such an offense to public transparency.
