It was reported after the 2000 presidential elections that the Bush/Rove fake out to the Christian Evangelist community mobilized at least 4 million new Republican voters. That number nearly doubled in 2004 (unfortunatly neither case was sufficient for Bush to win either election legally).
By my analysis, if you subtract them Christians from the 21% of Americans who self-identify as Republicans, you end up with a handful of folks in Utah County and south. I guess thats what they mean by ‘regional party.’
From: The Huffington Post, Family Research Council Slams New GOP Initiative
“The National Council for a New America, the much-publicized GOP re-branding initiative, is already facing skepticism from the party’s old allies. The Family Research Council, a powerful Christian conservative group, sent out a scathing press release hitting the Council’s avoidance of cultural issues.”
The effort only underscores the Republicans’ present identity crisis, as the GOP leadership kicked off the campaign devoid of the values that once caused voters to identify with the party.
Uh oh. I guess someone should have asked if Rove was only renting the religious folks.
