Even for a liberal, it’s hard not to fall in love with new Utah state rep, Holly Richardson.* She has a killer smile. She’s a political activist, Orrin Hatch hater, blogger, mid-wife and she’s adopted a gaggle of foster kids as diverse as the United Nations. Simply put, Holly Mama ROCKS!
What’s not to love?
In the normal course of flirting with Holly on Facebook, I implied possibly having given a sleeping bag to one of her kids down at Occupy Salt Lake City. Well didn’t I get slapped right back with a feistiness that would make Coulter/Bachmann/Palin proud. It still gives me tingles:
“Nah, my kids actually have a work ethic and don’t believe they are entitled to a job, to a college education or that pooping on people’s porches is appropriate behavior.”
I LOVE THAT! But Holly, Holly Help me Here! Didn’t we as a nation decide our kids should be entitled to a college education AND a job? Can we not promise that?
Because the alternative IS “pooping on peoples’ porches.”
In my heart of hearts I think Holly surprised even herself and on her excellent blog, cleverly disguised her apology in a nod to the 4th Amendment.
…the casual use of pepper spray for students who posed no physical threat to police is frankly an embarrassment and an affront to our nation’s belief in free speech. I don’t agree with the Occupy protestors – but […here comes the apology], I support their right to express their point of view.
Personal Note to Holly Richardson: (all others may stop reading now):
Holly, Everyone is saying you used the UC Davis pepper spray incident as an opportunity to associate yourself with the big banks, Freedom Works and the Koch brothers at the expense of the Patriotic Pepper-sprayed, Porch-Poopers.
Tell me it ain’t so.
Think for a moment Holly: Conservatives have been on the wrong side of every major, popular movement in world history until they supported them, INCLUDING the American revolution. Do YOU want to be on the wrong side of history? Life is long.
I remind m’ Lady, the Tories may have secretly liked the idea of independence, but they were scared wig-less about the messy way it was going down. And they got mean about it too. You should’ve heard what they said about the Boston tea partiers (the real ones). You’d have had to cover your ears. No, Hopeful Holly, the Conservatives of those times made life hell for George Washington and the porch-pooping “patriots” who decided to occupy their colonies.
In your defense, people say ya’ll Conservatives are afraid of change. That is absurd.** Ya’ll seem to LOVE change — just decades later. American Conservatives are really just afraid of the specter of mobs.
I have good news, the OWS “porch poopers” are doctors, engineers, students, Land Rover-driving soccer Moms, librarians and Minsters and we love you! We are you.
Holly, they say you’ve capitulated to the GOP instinct that says ring shout. Tell me it ain’t so.
Be on the right side of history. Holly, Hear me Holler! The Occupy Movement is ALREADY on the right side of history. Things happen a lot faster today than they did when that smelly Paul Revere-hippie went bell-tower spamming on horseback.
Join us Holly! Tell that Obama bastardo to call off the DHS! I promise you’ll get just as much mileage and spare having to explain yourself to your kids someday in the future when they are able to think for themselves.
*Note: In January of this year, Holly Richardson was selected/elected/appointed to the Utah State House of Representatives to replace Craig Frank, District 57.
**Note: Every conservative I know loves light-rail and rock concerts at Red Butte once they try them
Editors Note: Personally, I think Mika Brzenzki’s response to this terribly unfortunate rhetoric reflects the kind of graceful passion I like in my ladies.

Within seconds of the unfortunate death of a homeless man in Pioneer Park, the Utah freak-show cheered in unison; “SEE? We told you! The Salt Lake City occupiers are all homeless, drug addicts!”
For many Utahns, it was better than if the historicity of The Book of Mormon were provable.
I got pissed. I grabbed my video camera and went down to the new camp at Gallivan Center. I interviewed ONLY people who had or were still camping. All of them had jobs and NONE were homeless.
This is a snapshot of those interviews (Full interviews at OneUtah.org )
We can fight this plutocracy-funded propaganda by publishing many and often, ad hoc interviews of the regular Americans who are showing up for Occupy. We must do it locally, keep it “close to home.” Keep it real.
Last Saturday, Newt Gingrich stepped up the smear campaign against Occupy Wall Street (I didn’t know, you could get high on Cialis).
It was a full-guns-a-blazing frontal assault on every single American including the assholes that cheered when he said the “…after you take a shower” part. Check Mika Brzezinski’s gut reaction.
Expect great things from Occupy Salt Lake City (OccupySLC)
For those of you who don’t know, Salt Lake City is VERY liberal. We like to say, “Salt Lake is a world class city surrounded by Utah.”
The massive show of police force for the Pioneer Park eviction on November 12th was clearly orchestrated by PERF/DHS. There were at least 4 policemen for every camper.
I’m SURE DHS threatened Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder with funding cuts to get him to mobilize every scrap of metal in the county with flashing lights.
SLC Mayor Becker was punked by DHS. He was so disgusted about having to evict the occupiers from Pioneer Park, he disappeared (“vacation”) the next day. Chief (police) Burbank proved by his actions throughout the 2-year Tim DeChristopher sham trial, to be a great and respectful advocate of civil disobedience.
Christ, protesting in SLC, you practically have to BEG to get arrested. The authorities are on our side. If we can nudge them over, we will have won!
Avi Asher-Schapiro reports for Salon that the Egyptian military is using teargas made by an American company, CSI, based in Jamestown, Penn.
So, to sum up the irony: We invade a country in the middle east, Iraq, because they had nothing to do with a terrorist attack made, at least partly, because many people felt America is an imperial power, and has too much military influence. Since we know they had nothing to do with the attack, we have to add talk about “spreading democracy” into the mix. We don’t actually spread democracy, rather we bomb a couple hundred thousand Iraqis into the next world. This is totally not an example of the afore mentioned military influence or imperial behavior. Just sayin’.
When the Wall Street banks collapsed under the Bush/Rove/GOP, it sucked the wind out of the industrialized economies and quickly bled out to across the globe. If you watched anything other than Beck/O’Reily/Hannity et. al. you will remember the first major protests took place in Iceland.
Meanwhile back at home, a suppressed albeit deeply, cherished, American tradition called racism was reignited when Empire Murdock planted the first images of two adorable, little, chocolate-colored girls playing in the Lincoln Bedroom into the collective brains of pasty White America some of whom in turn, strapped guns to their hips and took to the streets in costumes reminiscent our racist forefathers.
God forgive us for being distracted while the rest of the world began to burn.
The OWS movement came to the western world through Spain. By early 2011, unemployment in Spain was approaching 21% (46% among youth) as the Arab Spring hit Egypt. On May 15, 2011 a series of protest, coordinated through Twitter and Facebook, unfolded in 58 Spanish cities.
By now you’ve heard of the New York City General Assembly. They began this summer as a series of meetings “on the fourth floor of 16 Beaver Street, near Wall Street. In addition to New Yorkers, there were also Egyptians, Spaniards, Japanese and Greeks. Dick Army was not among them.
Due to the lack of centralized coordination its hard to know for sure but as this writing there are an estimated 300 OWS protests in the US alone, over 3,000 arrests. So far, no sign of the tea party.
The biggest camp is at Pioneer Park downtown (map). Here’s a good video Larry found.
If you can’t camp, please at least go there and take them food (there is a full time kitchen) and warm weather supplies
Thanks George W. Bush. Your stumbling incompetence may have changed the world for the better.
