OWS Movement Imported From Spain But Made in America

When the Wall Street banks collapsed under the Bush/Rove/GOP, it sucked the wind out of the industrialized economies and quickly bled out to across the globe. If you watched anything other than Beck/O’Reily/Hannity et. al. you will remember the first major protests took place in Iceland.
Meanwhile back at home, a suppressed albeit deeply, cherished, American tradition called racism was reignited when Empire Murdock planted the first images of two adorable, little, chocolate-colored girls playing in the Lincoln Bedroom into the collective brains of pasty White America some of whom in turn, strapped guns to their hips and took to the streets in costumes reminiscent our racist forefathers.
God forgive us for being distracted while the rest of the world began to burn.
The OWS movement came to the western world through Spain. By early 2011, unemployment in Spain was approaching 21% (46% among youth) as the Arab Spring hit Egypt. On May 15, 2011 a series of protest, coordinated through Twitter and Facebook, unfolded in 58 Spanish cities.
By now you’ve heard of the New York City General Assembly. They began this summer as a series of meetings “on the fourth floor of 16 Beaver Street, near Wall Street. In addition to New Yorkers, there were also Egyptians, Spaniards, Japanese and Greeks. Dick Army was not among them.
Due to the lack of centralized coordination its hard to know for sure but as this writing there are an estimated 300 OWS protests in the US alone, over 3,000 arrests. So far, no sign of the tea party.
One of the several Salt Lake OWS Facebook page is approaching 9000 members. You will not find a larger Facebook group specific to Utah. Here’s the local website
The biggest camp is at Pioneer Park downtown (map). Here’s a good video Larry found.
If you can’t camp, please at least go there and take them food (there is a full time kitchen) and warm weather supplies

Marilyn Davenport: A Racist Teabagger From OC California.

Speaking of nameless cowards, there is one alleged “coward” in southern California we should be grateful to for exposing Marilyn Davenport, a Southern California Tea Party activist and member of the central committee of the Orange County Republican Party, as a racist teabagger. Indeed, a teabagger to which all the majority of teabaggers might someday aspire were they honest enough to come out publicly and admit their true feelings why they resent President and First Lady Michelle Obama occupying the White House.

Oh, come on! Everybody who knows me knows that I am not a racist. It was a joke. I have friends who are black. Besides, I only sent it to a few people–mostly people I didn’t think would be upset by it.
But Marilyn apparently does not see her being labeled a racist a joking matter:
After this story was published, she sent another email to fellow California conservative activists. It demanded to know the identity of “the coward” who supplied [The Weekly] with a copy of her offensive email.
Nice joke, Marilyn!! Oh, and thank you Jesus for this “coward.”
Hypocrisy on Parade and the Sole Jewish Republican in Congress

In recent times, it has been suggested that the Republican party has become the party of white men. This has never been more true than it is today. Between Congress and the Senate, Republicans can claim exactly zero African Americans and one Jew; Eric Cantor, and he is a pathetic hypocrite.
To Wit:
To those still feeling defensive about the accusations of racism among Republicans, consider for a moment why there are ZERO elected Republican African Americans in our legislative branch. Its a hard fact to explain.
While we do see a few unelected token Republicans in the party, Michael Steele for instance, there is not much the party can do about the fact that the now 20% of Americans who self-identify as Republicans will simply NOT elect an African American.
Based on the evidence, of the two political parties in this country, one has become a small cluster of xenophobic, white supremacists?
Frankly, I don’t see how there is any hope for Republicans in 2010 elections

Jenkins’ remark raises eyebrows

U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins offered encouragement to conservatives at a town hall forum that the Republican Party would embrace a “great white hope” capable of thwarting the political agenda endorsed by Democrats who control Congress and President Barack Obama.
One commenter nailed it:
We knew that Grinnin’ Lynn was a brain dead Republican moron, but who knew she was dumb enough to leak their main party platform in public?
Republicans like to get all indignant when you accuse them of being racists, especially the racists ones.
Count on them invoking Lincoln first then a string of Uncle Toms like Michael Steele, Colin Powell, Lil’ Bobby Jindal, Condoleeza Rice, Alan Keyes and others.
…Ooops, correction. That’s it. There ya have it. All the remaining Black Republicans listed in half a line of 12pt Verdana. Did I miss anyone?
GOP: Racism = Patriotism?

There was a time not so long ago when racism in America was institutionalized. It was a winning political platform especially among Southern Democrats. The 1964 Civil Rights Act caused the party to split and the racist became Republicans (as Pres. Lyndon Johnson predicted).
The 1965 Voters Rights Act made it much easier for Blacks to register to vote, so the adopted new tactics to prevent Blacks to actually vote. The Republicans continue to employ such tactics today.
The only thing that has changed is that more moderate (educated) Republicans don’t pronounce their racism publicly but rarely take a stand against it.

Two minutes later, Piker posted again saying “Obama Bin Lauden [sic] is the new terrorist… Muslim is on there side [sic]… need to take this country back from all of these mad coons… and illegals.
Eight minutes after that, at 2:02, Shay weighed in on Piker’s comments: “You tell em Eric! lol.”
Piker (Eric S.) is just an ignorant racist, but Audra Sigler Shaw is an ignorant racist endorsed by Bobby Jindal for President of the Young Republicans.
This pattern of racial remarks from grassroots Republican politicos highlights a real problem: As the party tacks right, it seems increasingly reluctant to challenge folks on its fringe for fear of offending the base—even, in this case, by failing to immediately rebuke racist supporters on a [Young Republicans] Facebook page. Let’s say that Shay’s “LOL” response was the online equivalent of nervous laughter, the kind of passive response to racist jokes that may have once been considered acceptable in pool halls and country clubs of the past. In the Internet era, it offers indelible evidence of acquiescing to something evil in our politics. There is a fear-based paralysis, a lack of moral clarity, which is in direct contradiction to their historic role as the Party of Lincoln.

It is the obligation of all Republicans to stand up against the racism so deeply rooted in their party, starting with Bobby Jindal.
But don’t hold your breath. Spineless people prefer to run and hide. Case in point: Both Audra Sigler Shay and Eric S Piker have disappeared from Facebook…just more racism shoved back into the shadows.

Post-Racist U.S.? Sadly, Not

One of our readers here commented that he was too young to remember the Black Power fist symbol as he was growing up in a post-racist generation. But as a CBS News story points out, racism isn’t dead in the U.S., it’s just been in remission.
CBS/AP) Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting “Assassinate Obama.” Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.
Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.
There have been “hundreds” of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes. (snip)
Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: “Let’s shoot that (N-word) in the head.” Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.
Before the election while looking at the Google searches that brought readers to my own blog, I ran across some alarming search text from Wasilla Alaska that said ‘why Barack Obama should be shot in the head’. Reallizing that search text had brought someone to my blog left me literally shaking.
You can read more incidents in the CBS article. I gently suggest to our young reader that if he sees America as post-racist, perhaps he’s been wearing blinders. I wonder if in my own lifetime I will see our country reach a place where we really are blind to race, gender, sexual preference, age, or other categories that still garner prejudice today.
