This is a genuine inquiry – I don’t know what this bill is about. Senate Bill 13, sponsored by ultra-conservative Margaret Dayton, made it out of committee and will be voted on by the full Senate. The bill is very short, and seems on the surface fairly innocuous.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, would make it illegal to intentionally give protected wildlife any substance that pacifies, sedates, immobilizes, harms, kills or controls its fertility.
Dayton said the bill reflected the “importance of wildlife in state.”
“Utah’s wildlife belongs to all of us,” she said.
Dayton said the legislation was designed to go after people who put substances in feeding areas that would be detrimental to or alter the life of animals in any way.
The reason I’m wondering, and I’ll admit, skeptical, is that Dayton hasn’t seemed to be an animal lover in the past, with her strong opposition to the animal cruelty bill presented in last year’s legislature.
Any OneUtah readers or authors able to offer more on this one?
